The U.S. Consulate General Internship Program 2019 closes 21 September 2018

The successful intern will work with either the Economic Advisor, Political Advisor, Cultural Affairs Director, Media Director or Management Officer.

What will you do?

Intern duties vary, but can include:

  • Research, analyze, and report on Western Australian politics & economics, environment, energy, media, and cultural affairs.
  • Assist in planning and implementing outreach activities such as receptions and speeches.
  • Plan and organize schedules for U.S. government officials visiting Western Australia.
  • Brief working-level U.S. officials on political, economic, social, and academic developments in Western Australia.
  • Administrative work.

Who is eligible?

In order to participate, you must be:

  • At least 18 years old.
  • An Australian citizen/Permanent Resident; (U.S. citizens are not eligible).
  • An undergraduate student currently enrolled in a university; the placement must be arranged through your university degree program.
  • Available for at least eight weeks, 8-15 hours per week, during Semester 1 or 2, 2019.
  • Skilled in written and oral communication.
  • Proficient on a computer.

Successful interns must pass a security and medical clearance by the U.S. Government before starting their internship. Interns will not be paid. Interns must have insurance cover from their university for the duration of their internship as no U.S. government insurance can be provided and no U.S. government liability is assumed. Interns must have private medical insurance or be eligible for Medicare. An official letter of recommendation can be provided upon completion of the internship.

Qualifications

A good knowledge of Western Australian economic, political, and business structure and institutions; general understanding of current U.S., Australian, and global political, economic, trade, environmental, and scientific issues.

Must have an eye for detail and excellent writing skills.

Advanced problem solving and communication skills; the ability to respond to deadlines and undertake multi-faceted projects.

Excellent time-management and the ability to produce results while under various degrees of pressure.

Students pursuing degrees in Political Science, International Relations, Economics, History, Environmental Studies, Law, Public or Business Administration, Marketing, Journalism, Media or Communications are preferred.
