The Graduate Program is a 10 month program offering workplace learning and development in a vibrant, supportive and opportunity driven environment.

Within the Program we offer:

The Department recruits graduates across five disciplines:

  • Generalist
  • Economics
  • Legal
  • Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
  • Quantitative Analysis


Generalist

We are seeking motivated and enthusiastic graduates for a range of roles within the generalist discipline. Our graduates will have highly developed communication, team work and problem solving skills. They will be flexible to changing environments and have the desire and drive to contribute to the Department’s vision More Jobs. Great Workplaces. More job seekers into jobs. Safe, fair and productive workplaces.

Our graduates will be exposed to different work areas and may find themselves in various roles including policy development and advice, program implementation, project and contract management, communications, finance and human resources.

Economics
The Department of Jobs and Small Business is seeking graduates who are enthusiastic, energetic and have a strong background in economics and/or econometrics and who are looking for a challenging and rewarding career. Our graduate economists are exposed to a variety of areas in the Department, are involved in core work that is meaningful, and gives graduates responsibility from the start.

Legal
Graduate lawyers are involved in the full range of work undertaken by our legal teams, including in the areas of government and administrative law, corporate and commercial law, intellectual property, insolvency law, legislation development (including drafting of legislative instruments), social security, information law, litigation, workers’ compensation, workplace relations and work health and safety law.Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
The Department of Jobs and Small Business is seeking motivated and enthusiastic graduates for a range of roles within the ICT discipline. Our graduates will work alongside ICT professionals, and contribute as part of a team in roles not limited to; development, business analysis, system testing, database administration, system administration, production support and network and gateway.

Quantitative Analysis
Quantitative Analysis graduates work in a variety of areas in the Department and gain experience in analytical programs such as Excel, SAS or SQL. Examples of past work include measuring and reporting on the labour market outcomes of disadvantaged groups, designing surveys to measure and evaluate the effectiveness of programs or interventions, and using predictive modelling and analytics to develop insights into the behaviour of job seekers. Such work typically includes communication of the findings to a broad audience, whether it is through a brief for a Minister, writing published reports or facilitating a seminar.
