Welcome back to the SPARK Co-Lab Actuator Series. This is a session on on clinical needs assessment - specifically, how to identify the right unmet clinical needs that can provide a foundation for successful product development. The session will be run by Dr Matt Oldakowski, Course Director of the Perth Biodesign course run in partnership between Accelerating Australia and SPARK Co-Lab.

Matt is a biomedical engineering researcher and medical device entrepreneur with a mechanical engineering degree from The University of Western Australia. In his PhD studies at Curtin University he co-developed an expandable orthopaedic screw which spun-out into REX Ortho. He is also a co-inventor and co-founder of Cervical ChinUp. Matt has recently returned from Stanford University where he was a Global Faculty in Training Fellow at the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign, as well as being an Endeavour Executive Fellow. Now back in Perth, he is working across Curtin University and St John of God Hospital to establish bioengineering capability, in addition to being Perth Biodesign’s co-Course Director.Matt will be joined by Martina Mariano, co-founder of Biacor Pty Ltd as a result of her participation in the 2017 SPARK Co-Lab Design Course and currently supporting the 2018 Perth Biodesign course as an Alumni Fellow mentor. Martina is a medical researcher with a strong passion for innovative medical technologies and devices. After working as a molecular biologist and geneticist both locally and internationally, in academia and industry, Martina is currently completing her Ph.D. in Neurodevelopment at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research through The University of Western Australia. At Biacor, Martina is part of the team that has developed AbYWin™, a novel technology to improve the diagnosis of prosthetic joint infection.
